“We can’t as a club overreach”: Warburton sends warning to fans ahead of January window – Report

|

He talks about it being a problem, but there is one simple way to get around it.

Speaking on the club website ahead of the game with Preston North End, Warburton talked about how the club will be looking for value in the January transfer window and that the club isn’t necessarily in a position to be ‘overspending’ in order to get the right player:

“January is the toughest window, if you’re out there in the market you’re either in a relegation fight and you’re looking for someone, they know you’re going to pay up. Or you’re at the top end and they know you’re going to pay up, so a £2m player becomes a £4m player, a £500k player becomes £1.2m and you negotiate to £1m, and we can’t as a club overreach, we have to always seek value in every pound that we spend. If the right player is available, act, and if not then hold your money back”

This though somewhat touches on what I was saying in regards to the potential transfer of Eberchi Eze the other day. Whilst in that piece I spoke about combing that sale with a new manager to give him a great starting bank balance as it were, you can apply the same logic if Warburton remains in charge.

The sale of just one player means that Queens Park Rangers can afford to be a little bit more adventurous when it comes to the transfer market, that way they won’t find themselves haggling over that last £200k that he talked about, and they’ll be able to bring in the player that they need and not risk losing out on him just because they didn’t have enough money.

The QPR fans have shown that they are quite willing to make that kind of sacrifice in letting Eze go, so it’s not as if a move like that would go down like a lead balloon.

Where do the club need to invest the most in January?

This will be Warburton’s second window as Rangers boss, and if he really wants to start turning things around properly, then he needs to have the funds and squad to be able to do it, and if that means sacrificing one player in order to bring in a number of talented ones into the squad, he should consider making that change.
