Report: Youngster being targeted by Saints

|

QPR midfielder Eberechi Eze is on Southampton’s January wishlist, according to reports.

The Sun reported on Sunday (January 5, pg. 61) that Saints are interested in trying to buy Rangers’ key man.

Within the report, it suggests that Eze, 21, is valued at £20m by his club – and they expect to be receiving a lot of interest in the midfielder.

They are not the only team reported to be interested in him, either. According to the Express, both Sheffield United and Tottenham Hotspur are having a serious look at the former Millwall youth player.

Mainly playing on the wing, Eze has the versatility to cover a lot of options, which may also suit Southampton. He has mainly played in attacking midfield this campaign, however, he has also been able to play on the left as well as the right, according to Transfermarkt.

The England U21 international is having some season, so the interest that is building for him is really to be expected. QPR will know that they can’t hang on to him forever, so they will be looking to maximise the fee they can get for him if they can’t keep him until the end of the year.

Do the club need to sell Eze to move forward?

Yes

No

From his 26 games so far this season, he has managed to score 10 goals and get six assists, a hugely impressive return for a midfielder of his age.

While no fan wants to see a key player leave, £20m could ultimately open up plenty of opportunities which could benefit the club in the long run. That money would go a long way to potentially sorting out some of the defensive fragilities in the squad as well as finding a replacement for Eze.

According to WhoScored’s match rating algorithm, there is just one player in the whole of the Championship who has a better rating – John Swift. They believe he averages a 7.48/10 – and he is also the youngest player in the top 10.
