James Linington will be the man in the middle as Rangers open their npower Championship season against Barnsley.

The official who has been on the National List of referees since 2008 has made a name for himself in a brief stint.

He caused controversy in the Carling Cup by causing Scunthorpe’s game with Swansea to be abandoned with City were left with six men.

In the 2009/10 season he took charge of QPR for the first time in their 1-1 home draw against Nottingham Forest.

Mikele Leigertwood’s excellent opener was cancelled out by David McGoldrick as Forest embarked on a run that culminated in a playoff place.

Last season, Linington handed out 75 yellows and two reds in 33 games – giving him an average of 2.33 cards per game.

This weekend he will be assisted by Mr Andy Davies (Hampshire) and Mr Rob Whitton (Essex) – the fourth official being Mr Carl Berry (Surrey).
