Opinion: The important quality that means QPR need to secure deals for duo

|

Queens Park Rangers have enjoyed a promising first season under Mark Warburton, with the R’s still just about in contention for a top six finish.

Whether the Londoners do win promotion or not, it’s still likely to be a very busy transfer window for the ex-Brentford chief as he looks to build on the good work he has done. Although, they face a huge challenge to keep hold of the productive Eberechi Eze, with Tottenham said to be interested.

That may not be something that Warburton can control, as ultimately money could talk. However, one thing that is in his control is the future of Geoff Cameron and Marc Pugh, with the club having the option to extend the deals of the pair who are out of contract in the summer.

With Pugh 33, and Cameron a year older, there’s no denying that they aren’t going to be the long-term answer and the manager has made it clear that part of his remit is to bring through younger players. Yet, there needs to be a balance.

Would you keep Marc Pugh & Geoff Cameron for another year?

Yes to both

No to both

Pugh yes, Cameron no

Pugh no, Cameron yes

Toni Leistner is adamant that he does not want to return to QPR and Angel Rangel is out of contract in the summer, so the average age of the squad could drop considerably if Pugh and Cameron went as well.

Of course, age shouldn’t matter but the reality is that these younger players can benefit from working with the experienced pair. Both have played in the Premier League and Cameron has represented his country and the fact they are still playing suggests they are good professionals.

So, even if their impact reduces on the pitch, keeping Pugh and Cameron could be crucial in helping the talent develop at QPR and their experience can benefit what will be a very young dressing room.
