Opinion: Queens Park Rangers can’t afford to do things half-heartedly after Wells’ departure

|

Someone is going to have to handle the workload now that Nahki Wells has gone.

It might as well be this guy, although we might not see him as often as we might be hoping for according to QPR boss Mark Warburton.

With Wells now back at his parent club, the rest of the team is going to have to start putting in a lot more effort if they are to avoid sliding down the Championship table, something that I have talked about recently, and one of the contenders is Bright Osayi-Samuel.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s game with Blackburn Rovers, Warburton talked about the trouble when it comes to finding the right amount of game time for someone like Osayi-Samuel to get:

“Bright is working hard. People say ‘start him in every game’ but he is a young athlete and you have to look after him. All that would happen if he started every game is that we would lose him to injury. He’s done tremendously well but there will be times where I have to take him off. You may hear howls of ‘why are you taking him off?’ but it’s because we have to look after the players, especially younger players. Bright is in great form, his confidence is high but he has got to keep working and learning.”

The thing is though, with the departure of Wells, we are going to need all of our best players to be firing 100% of the time, rather than have them turn up every now and then. And with Warburton speaking so highly of him, it’s clear that he is going to be one of those players going forward.

And it’s going to have to be up to him, and to an extent the rest of the coaching staff to make sure that players like him start producing at a level that means we won’t miss what Wells brought to the table.

Will BOS be able to fill some of the void left by Wells?

Yes

No

If you have to risk playing him every game, then so be it, it’s something I personally would be willing to take. This isn’t going to be something we can mess around with, especially if we can’t bring anyone else in to replace him, we need to be aggressive in Wells’ absence.
