Mark Bosnich has returned to Australia as he begins a two week trial with Central Coast on Thursday.
Bosnich 36, has aroused the attentions of Mariners boss Lawrie McKinna who is seeking replacement for stopper Danny Vukovic who is suspended for a lengthy period.
The former Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa stopper had been training with the R`s under former Rangers and Aston Villa manager John Gregory, following his recovery from a cocaine addiction that saw him lose his role at Chelsea.
Manager McKinna thinks that this will not be a problem in his new role however:
‘He wants to come back as a footballer and to do that he needs to be on the straight and narrow,’ he told AAP.
‘We would expect Mark to come in here as a model professional and hopefully show people how good he was and how good he possibly could be.’
‘If he can prove that he deserves a spot in our team it could be a springboard for him for Europe to get back to the game over there”
McKinna had no doubt that former Australian international goalkeeper, Bosnich, was one of the best, and its not too late to recapture some of that form:
‘We all know he was one of the best goalkeepers in the world, if not the best.
‘He is fit, he is hungry and wants to prove himself.”
‘It is too early to say when he will play but it is a possibility and there would not a bigger game than if it were against Sydney and if that was the case there could be 20,000 people at Bluetongue,’
‘He will be one of the better known trialists I would have thought.’
Born in Fairfield, New South Wales, Bosnich started out with Australian National Soccer League outfit, Sydney Croatia, before making the big move to England in 1989 and Alex Ferguson`s Manchester United.
Two years later Bosnich made the move to Aston Villa under Ron Atkinson, a move for which he is most famed. He made 179 league appearances for the Villans, winning two league cups in the process. He moved back to Manchester United on the Bosman ruling making 23 appearances before moving on once more in 2001 to Chelsea, he is yet to play since leaving Chelsea back in 2003.
