QUEENS Park Rangers succumbed to a 2-1 defeat despite a 15th goal of the campaign for Charlie Austin.

Alexis Sanchez was predictably the brightest spark in an otherwise tepid Arsenal line-up and his impressive counter-attacking work allowed the Gunners to take the upper hand in an even fixture.

He started the move that gave the visitors the advantage when his strong run saw Kieran Gibbs made inroads down the left and cross for Olivier Giroud to put his Monaco nightmares behind him.

Sanchez somehow conspired to miss a one-on-one opportunity with Green in exemplary form – but the Chilean wasn’t to be denied moments later when his mazy run and shot somehow squirmed beyond Green, doubling the Gunners advantage.

Rangers rallied and the lively Austin rocketed a shot beyond David Ospina to set up a grand-stand finale – but the hosts couldn’t break through to claim a point. Attention now turns to Saturday and the other half of the North London derby in Tottenham Hotspur.
