QUEENS Park Rangers eased past Southend United in their final pre-season fixture before the 2013-14 Championship campaign.

Rangers controlled vast swathes of the clash that saw them take the lead when Andrew Johnson’s converted Shaun Wright-Phillips’ left-wing cross.

They didn’t have it all their own way when Phil Brown’s Shrimpers forced Clint Hill into an own goal prior to the break, but Rangers wasted little time in regaining the advantage in the second period.

A rare, testing corner from the boot of a QPR player – Junior Hoilett, whose set-piece found the head of the unmarked Stephane Mbia to nod home with his first touch coming from the bench.

Nedum Onuoha rounded off the scoring when a corner was only half cleared. The central defender was on hand to slam home the loose ball and give a fair reflection to a rather one-sided game.

A couple of mistakes from Rob Green did threaten to hand Southend the advantage in the first period, but in truth, Rangers looked comfortable throughout and will look to take the positivity into their first test of the season against Sheffield Wednesday.
