The unforgettable cup run of 1982 and subsequent promotion to the first division paved the way for quite a remarkable period of Queens Park Rangers history. Managed by the young and irrepressible Terry Venables the R?s had overcome two division one teams in Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion to reach their first ever FA Cup Final.
QPR were massive underdogs going into the game against the reigning cup holders who were aiming to equal Aston Villa?s record of seven FA Cup triumphs. Spurs were undoubtedly the stronger of the two teams, but a resilient Queens Park Rangers defence stood between them and the opening goal, and Wembley seemed destined to be heading for it?s first goalless FA Cup Final. But with only eleven minutes of extra time remaining, Glenn Hoddle?s goal appeared to clinch victory, but QPR were not about to throw the towel that easily.
With the game deep in extra time and with chances few and far between Venables side led by their Captain Glen Roeder threw everything they had at Ray Clemences goal. Simon Strainrod won a throw in just outside the area and then arrowed a ball into the box which was deftly flicked on by Bob Hazell? The whole of Wembley drew breath as Terry Fenwick appeared at the back post to head the ball over the line, to send the QPR fans into ecstasy? The underdogs were back in it.
Queens Park Rangers had surpassed all expectations and earned a replay against the run away favourites. The R?s couldn?t repeat their heroics in that replay beneath the twin towers as Glen Hoddle?s disputed penalty kick proved to be decisive, and the solitary goal was enough to clinch Spur?s seventh FA Cup in their centenary year.
