It simply has not worked. That is a rather stark assessment of Esteban Granero’s time with Queens Park Rangers, but I believe it holds very true. The Spaniard has talent, you can see it in his touch, his turn and his vision – but his shortcomings are just as evident.

He wants far too much time on the ball, time that is simply not afforded in the English game, and his confidence and levels of application are clearly sapped with every dispossession, misplaced pass and goal conceded.

He will probably move elsewhere on the continent and make a success of his career – but I don’t feel he will do that in England – the rigours of the league being too tough and the game moving too quickly for a player that needs time to express himself.
