Opinion: Why QPR need to step up pursuit of 24-y/o after rival interest emerges

|

When the transfer window eventually opens, you would imagine bringing in a new striker is going to be high on the list of priorities for Mark Warburton at Queens Park Rangers.

Whilst the team have coped admirably following the departure of top scorer Nahki Wells in January to stay in contention for a top six finish, the reality is they are going to need at least one number nine through the door in the coming months. And, Livingston’s Lyndon Dykes should be a target for the R’s.

It was reported prior to Christmas that the Australian was someone the Londoners had been monitoring but nothing came of that in January and there’s been nothing since. However, Dykes’ name has started to appear on the radar of other clubs, with the Daily Mail suggesting the 9-goal forward has been identified by Glasgow Rangers and Stoke City and that needs to spark the QPR recruitment team into action.

Of course, it’s going to be difficult to convince Dykes to come the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium if the interest from Glasgow is genuine but he has the abilities to thrive in the Championship. His classy finish against Celtic back in October showed how he can perform against the best in Scotland and he also caused them huge problems, and provided an assist, when Livi held the runaway leaders last month.

Would Lyndon Dykes be a good signing for the R's?

Yes

No

Importantly, at 24 and having previously played for Queen of the South in the lower leagues up north, Dykes fits into the hardworking culture that Warburton is building at QPR and would be desperate to prove himself. Plus, he fits the bill in terms of cost, with the report claiming he is viewed as a potential bargain this summer as Livi win’t be in a position to demand a big fee.

So, it’s down to QPR to act. The potential financial implications of this enforced break means that some clubs are reluctant to think about transfers but if the R’s are capable of looking ahead then they need to do all they can to land the striker.
