Damien Delaney, saw Hull City promoted to the Premier League, before embarking on some history of his own making his first international appearance.
Speaking to QPR.co.uk the Cork born defender spoke of his delight on playing for his country:
“I didn`t even expect to make it into the squad, let alone the starting eleven, so I was really nervous when the boss gave me the nod.” Damien told the official website.
“He just told me to play my natural game and enjoy the occasion, generally he said to continue what I`ve been doing at club level with QPR”
Damien spoke of his delight to be working with the likes of skipper Robbie Keane and coach Liam Brady:
‘Robbie took me to one side and just told me to enjoy it. He told me I was playing on merit and that was very encouraging to hear from such a great Irishman,’ said Delaney.
I’ve admired Liam Brady for years and just to be in his company was special, but he again spoke very positively, before and after the game.’
On his own performance Damien was satisfied and had high hopes for the future:
‘I was the only Championship player to start the match and that fills me with great pride.’
‘I’m loving every minute of it’
‘I don’t know whether I’ll play on Thursday, but either way, I’ve had a great time with the squad and I’m enjoying every minute.”
He added:
‘I said that moving to QPR could enhance my international aspirations and I couldn’t be more delighted with how the first five months or so have gone since I made the move down from Hull.’
On his former side Hull City gaining promotion in a Wembley final, Delaney was happy that his former team-mates came through on the big stage:
‘I couldn’t be any happier for them.’
‘I exchanged a few good luck texts with the lads on Saturday morning and they repaid the compliment and thankfully things worked out pretty well for us all.’
