Jake Cole who recently completed a three-month loan deal with Oxford United, helped the U`s to victory over non-league Banbury United.
Cole was a virtual spectator at Banbury United`s Spencer Stadium after Oxford United cantered to a 4-0 victory over their Southern League Premier Division opponents.
Oxford United fielded a strong team including Colchester United loanee Jamie Guy and former Republic of Ireland International Barry Quinn, as well as former Bristol Rovers forward Lewis Haldane. They fairly crushed the Puritans in a lacklustre affair, with goals firstly from James Constable following a considerable build up of pressure.
The second half brought more pressure and more goals as Jamie Guy stole the show cutting in from the left flank and firing a right footed shot past first choice stopper Andy Wheeler, a shot that had a hint of deflection along the way.
Guy continued to torment the Banbury rearguard and made it three soon after, rounding young substitute goalkeeper Joe Murrell with a classy move before slotting into an empty net. Nervy keeper Murrell saw his kick charged down by former Eastbourne Borough forward Yemi Odubade and trialist Craig Reid did his contract chances no harm whatsoever by curling the ball into the near post for the fourth.
The defeat was tough on Banbury United, with the Southern League outfit picking up several knocks throughout the encounter, as they couldn`t match the performance of their local rivals, Brackley Town who beat the U`s 2-1 only a few days previous.
As for Jake Cole, he never really had much to do throughout the evening despite playing the full 90 minutes for the U`s. He had a good voice on him and looked able to command his area, but wasn`t tested anywhere near to his potential as Oxford ran out clear winners on the day.
Cole himself spoke on the deal that takes him to the Kassam Stadium:
‘I’ve enjoyed the first two games and I’ve kept two clean sheets which I’m happy with,’ said Cole.
‘It’s nice to be playing some competitive games. I’ve not been tested too much as yet, but I’d like to show people what I can do by making a few saves. I’ve been sent out on loan to play regular football and that’s what I’m looking forward to here.’
