He is already drawing rave reviews in brief time at Adams Park and Gareth Ainsworth helped inspire Wycombe Wanderers to back to back wins.
Gary Waddock’s men hosted Brentford last night in a bid to build on their surprise weekend win over Millwall, with Ainsworth starting on the right flank.
His combative and passionate stylings on the right flank gave Wycombe the impetus to drive forward and search for the key goal – it appeared that one goal would be enough in this encounter.
Brentford were offering little in riposte as the hosts took the lead from the spot on 48 minutes – Matt Harrold the scorer from the spot.
Wanderers looked comfortable for their lead and could have added a second when Ainsworth was hauled down by James Wilson in the area – the defender receiving a red card for his troubles.
Harrold spurned the chance of a brace however when his spot kick was saved by Arsenal loanee Wojciech Szczęsny.
Ainsworth’s fitness levels were unrivalled as he continued to be a threat late into the game as Gary Waddock’s men look to haul themselves away from the drop zone.
Lee Brown and Joe Oastler were dropped to the bench for Salisbury Town’s fixture away at Crawley Town, but the former was called into action sooner than expected.
Former Arsenal trainee Sean Clohessy was forced to withdraw shortly after the 15 minute mark, and Brown took to the field.
The task was made more difficult when Jamie Turley lost his cool on the stroke of half time and was red-carded for the visitors.
The Whites eventually succumbed five minutes after the break as Ben Smith opened the scoring for Crawley.
Three minutes from time the hosts sewed the fixture up with Lewis Killeen doubling Crawley’s lead and putting them eight points clear of the Whites.
Tommy Widdrington with much to ponder after dropping the R’s youngsters for this fixture, albeit Oastler returning after a virus.
