Former Queens Park Rangers defender Tommy Williams is under the impression that he will get a hard time as he returns to W12 this Saturday.

The full-back’s moment in a QPR shirt is best defined by his actions at the Millennium Stadium when after doing all the hard work in beating three men Williams decided to scoop the ball into the side netting instead of squaring to two unmarked men – one of which being Paul Furlong.

From Williams’ words it seems he doesn’t quite understand what was a pivotal moment for supporters, and is seemingly content to stir up ill-feeling in a support relatively ambivalent as to his arrival.

He described a rather different course of events in Wales to the Peterborogh Telegraph:

‘There is one moment from that final that I always get reminded about whenever I see any QPR fans.

‘If I bump into them on holiday or wherever all they remember is me running the entire length of the Millennium Stadium, beating seven men on the way, and then shooting instead of passing to Paul Furlong in the middle.”

In what is a somewhat surprising set of comments, Williams goes on the offensive to pre-empt any potential jeers he may receive in W12.

He recalls that last time he visited with Peterborough United and set up the opening goal, and while Loftus Road even then was fairly indifferent to his presence, he again remembers a different course of events.

‘They tend to forget that I played a big part in winning the play-off semi-final as I set up two goals against Oldham, but that’s some fans for you. I expect I’ll get reminded of that one moment after about 30 seconds tomorrow.

‘I’ve only been back there once and that was with Posh when I set up a goal for Clive Platt . I was jeered a bit that night and I expect it will be the same tomorrow.

‘I hope they do well. I have friends and family who support QPR so I’m always looking out for their results. I don’t support them though, I follow Chelsea which is another reason why they will boo me!’

While it is fair to say that Williams is remembered for a key moment in the play-off final, he is also remembered for the role he played in the side.

His comments on this occasion are somewhat surprising when you consider the lack of ill-feeling between the two parties.

Williams scored one goal for Rangers in 39 appearances predominantly at full-back, but on a couple of occasions he played central midfield in Ian Holloway’s side.
