The new millennium saw Bristol City replace caretaker manager Tony Fawthrop with former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Wilson. After a promising season injuries within the squad led to a loss of form and rather than push for promotion the club faltered and ended up in ninth position. The following season saw The Robins on top of the table at Christmas, but, as in the previous season their end of season form let them down as they slid to seventh in the table.
The 2003 season saw the club score a massive 106 goals but they still missed out on an automatic promotion spot by 3 points. The play offs saw them lose to Cardiff City at the first hurdle, although they did manage to get to a final that season when they beat Carlisle United in the final of the LDV Vans Trophy at the Millenium Stadium.
The following season saw Bristol create a club record as they won 11 successive games between December and February and also boasted the meanest defence in the division. They entered the final day of the season still with a chance of an automatic promotion place, but QPR`s result at Hillsborough that day meant the Robins had to settle once again for a play off spot. This time they reached the final but a 1-0 defeat to Brighton consigned them to yet another season in the First Division.
That defeat proved to be a costly one for Danny Wilson and he was replaced by fans favourite Brian Tinnion who became player manager. His first season in charge saw the club miss the play offs by a solitary point in his last season as a player, despite a 29 goal season from striker Leroy Lita.
Tinnion made seven signings before the start of the 05/06 season, including Marcus Stewart, but the season started badly and after a 7-1 defeat to Swansea the club were one point off the foot of the table, prompting Tinnion to step down. The Robins didn`t look to far away for a replacement and quickly appointed Yeovil Town boss Gary Johnson. Johnson weaved his magic and steadily Bristol climbed to safety, eventually finishing in ninth place.
The 06/07 started badly and soon fans were calling for Johnson`s head, but they were silenced as he led his team into the top six and into an eleven match unbeaten run which saw the team charge to the head of the table. A last day win by 3-1 over doomed Rotherham sparked celebrations all over Bristol as the team won promotion back into the Championship.
Once promotion was assured Johnson didn`t rest on his laurels but went looking for signings to consolidate their new found status. After a terrible pre season City found form as the 07/08 season got under way and by March found themselves at the top of the table. A dip in form saw them slide back down the table but they recovered to snatch a play off berth win a last day win over Preston. A 4-2 aggregate win over Crystal Palace saw them 90 minutes away from the Premier League, but Hull City had other ideas and gained promotion with a 1-0 win at Wembley.
This season City started poorly, but a good run after Christmas has seen them move up into play off contention once again.
