Barnsley have surpassed expectations for the season and appear to have cantered to Championship safety with minimal fuss. Paul Heckingbottom has done a commendable job in his first outing as a manger in the second tier, leading the Tykes to what should be mid-table security.

Essentially, Barnsley had their job done in a positive first half to the season. Since then they have lost some serious talent – Aston Villa wading in with all the subtlety of a bull in a china shop to take skipper Conor Hourihane and young full-back James Bree, while talisman Sam Winnall travelled across Yorkshire to Sheffield Wednesday.

Form has inevitably tailed off a bit in recent times – one win in seven for the Tykes has effectively put to bed any fledgling playoff aspirations – but that one win against Hourihane and Bree at Villa Park will have been sweet indeed for the travelling Tykes fans.

On the road they have only been defeated twice this year in seven games, beating Villa, Rotherham, Nottingham Forest and Cardiff City along the way – scoring nine in those games.

An excellent first season back for Barnsley who will look to cement their place in the top half with a win in W12 and ultimately a double over Queens Park Rangers.
