It was Nicky Maynard that proved once again that he is the man of the moment after hitting a rasping drive in off the underside of the bar for his sixth goal in seven games.
Crystal Palace 0-4 Scunthorpe United
The most surprising result of the day as Neil Warnock’s Eagles were humbled at home by the hard-working Iron.
Palace were stunned when returning striker Jonathan Forte handed United the lead by rounding Speroni and slotting home. The lead was doubled when Paul Hayes reacted quickest to a Rob Jones flick-on and dispatch the ball at the near post shortly before the hour mark.
A drilled effort by Palace reject Sam Togwell made it three for the Iron, before the rout was complete moments later as former Crewe man Michael O’Connor dispatched coolly from close range.
Derby County 0-1 Sheffield United >>>
A fairly even game was settled infront of a bumper crowd at Pride Park by a thumping header from Matthew Kilgallon.
Keith Treacy, who had wasted a hat-full of chances on his own, put in the telling cross for Kilgallon to power home with ten minutes remaining to the delight of the travelling support.
The Blades continue to make their mark on the playoff race and they will be looking to go one better than last season with automatic promotion the ultimate goal.
Leicester City 2-1 Blackpool >>> >>>
An unhappy return for Ian Holloway to the Walkers Stadium as the side he relegated came back to inflict Blackpool’s first Championship defeat of the season.
Matthew Fryatt’s brace either side of a Charlie Adam equaliser won the game for Leicester. The first coming after quick thinking from Richie Wellens found the former Walsall man in space to slot through the legs of Paul Rachubka.
Adam’s equaliser came following a neat one-two with Jason Euell, as the former Glasgow Rangers man rolled home from close range, before Fryatt had the final say rounding Rachubka and placing home with relative ease in the second period.
Middlesbrough 3-1 Ipswich Town
Middlesbrough continue to march on with the leading pack at the top of the division, while lofty pre-season expectations continue to weigh heavy on Roy Keane’s Ipswich who have yet to pick up their first win.
Marvin Emnes has been a key player thus far for Boro, and his cross set up Gary O’Neil for the opener, while Adam Johnson did likewise to supply Jeremie Aliadiere for the first of his brace, the second coming with five minutes remaining.
Town did muster a goal with John Walters scoring from the spot six minutes into injury time, but it wasn’t enough as Keane has yet more food for thought.
Preston North End 2-0 Swansea City >>>
Undefeated Preston North End displayed their strong playoff credentials by dispatching of Paulo Sousa’s Swansea City at Deepdale.
Close range efforts from Neil Mellor and Stephen Elliott helped dispatch the Swans, who themselves are firmly rooted in the bottom half after a less than impressive start.
Preston meanwhile sit two points off the summit of the Championship as they look to mount a serious challenge on not only the playoffs but the automatic positions this season.
Queens Park Rangers 1-1 Peterborough United
Reading 0-0 Doncaster Rovers >>> >>>
A bore draw at the Madejski Stadium as Reading once again struggle to find their feet under Brendan Rodgers. Relatively contented with the point his side were the more attacking with Neil Sullivan thwarting Darren O’Dea and Grzegorz Rasiak to name but a few.
Below-par Doncaster battled bravely against some experienced players and to their credit came out of the game with a point, something which boss Sean O’Driscoll saw as a distinct positive given the nature of their display.
Playoff semi-finalists Reading continue to try and rejuvenate their team but with only six points from their opening fixtures, time will tell whether they will be able to emulate last year’s achievements.
Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Nottingham Forest >>>
Disaster defender Wes Morgan deflected a Marcus Tudgay effort home a little over five minutes before half time. This contributing to his brace of own goals so far makes for bleak reading for the Forest defender.
Forest had taken the lead courtesy of an early goal from Dexter Blackstock, before the same striker missed a guilt-edge chance moments later to double the advantage. It proved to be costly as Tudgay’s effort was diverted home by the forlorn defender for the equaliser.
Watford 1-0 Barnsley
Barnsley continue their impending slide into League One football, if this drab display under new boss Mark Robins is anything to go by.
A poor game between two of the division’s basement sides was settled when Danny Graham bundled home a Don Cowie free-kick ten minutes into the second half.
Both sides could be in danger this season, but Watford appear to be finding that extra piece of impetus that eludes the Tykes at present.
West Bromwich Albion 3-1 Plymouth Argyle
A rare brace from defender Marek Cech helped to cancel out a shock early opener from Jamie Mackie as Albion continued their ascent back to the top of the Championship.
Mackie’s 12th minute strike had given the Pilgrims the early advantage but defender Shelton Martis levelled from close range after a flick on from Jonas Olsson.
A powerful drive from distance and a headed effort from the Slovakian defender secured his brace, the Baggies three points, and ultimately a table-topping win for West Bromwich Albion.
