“We Have To Learn From The Mistakes” – Warburton Highlights A Few Areas For Improvement After Pre-Season Defeat

|

Queens Park Rangers manager Mark Warburton has already taken the squad out to Austria for a training camp as we continue our pre-season campaign and on Friday evening he was in the dug out for the first time as we took in a friendly fixture against Austria Vienna.

QPR lost the match 3-1 on the night, with two goals in the second half proving to be our undoing after Josh Scowen had got us back on level terms, with the gaffer was largely pleased with what he saw from the squad before a touch of tiredness kicked in.

Speaking to the Official Site, Warburton acknowledged that our hosts were the fitter side as their competitive campaign starts next weekend, but he also picked out some obvious areas of our game that need to be improved upon.

“I thought there was a lot of good work done by many of the squad. That’s our first game and there were some tired legs at the end but I thought in the first hour there were a lot of positives. Austria Vienna are a very good team and they’re ahead in their pre-season preparations so I was really pleased that we matched them, made the chances and the boys looked really positive.”

With the second half being the poorer, the errors in our play that he saw he knows are pretty easily corrected, so that will obviously be the aim.

“It was disappointing in the second half, it was poor to give away two sloppy goals, we’ve got to clear our lines and think about risk reward, when to play it tight when to go long but we’re learning. Overall, lots of positives but we have to learn from the mistakes, there’s lots we can do better but that’s the first pre-season game and overall there’s many things to be happy about. I saw some good ball movement, they switched it effortlessly in the first half, they worked them, they moved the ball along. When we take the extra touch we allow the opponent to catch us – when we play really fast and move the ball quickly like we did for long periods we look a good team. All credit to the players, they’ve done a lot of work this week, they’ve taken onboard some ideas so hopefully with the next game now on Tuesday against Boreham Wood we can go harder again.”
