Ben Watson was keen to point out that while he is on loan at QPR he hopes that his future lies in the Premier League with Wigan Athletic.

Watson penned a loan deal at Loftus Road which takes him to the January transfer window, fuelling speculation that a permanent deal may be on the cards.

The former Crystal Palace man has spoken to the Wigan Evening Post indicating that he still has a future at the DW Stadium under Roberto Martinez.

‘The move wasn’t really a surprise to me,” he said.

‘It wasn’t that I wasn’t in the gaffer’s plans, but I knew he wanted me to go out on loan.

‘He couldn’t guarantee me games at the moment, which is fair enough.

‘So instead of me sitting in the stands or sitting on the bench and playing 10 minutes here and there, it was best for me to get out and play in week in, week out.’

While admitting his frustration at the lack of first team opportunity in Lancashire he has underlined his ambition to fight for his place at Wigan, using his time at Loftus Road to impress visiting Wigan scouts.

Despite his Premier League ambitions he feels that coming to QPR is a step in the right direction, believing that the loan spell with QPR could be mutually beneficial.

‘I had options, but I’m looking forward to playing well for QPR,” Ben continued.

‘This is a club that is going places, and it’s just a matter of finding some consistency in this league.

‘If you can find some consistency in the Championship, you will be in and around the automatic promotion places for the Premier League.

‘I’ve come here to prove myself again, to play games, to win games and to play well.’

This dampens speculation that Rangers had set up a permanent deal for the 24-year-old midfielder, who is still looking to impress his existing employers.

He looks destined to start at the heart of midfield on Saturday as QPR host Peterborough United, before the mouth-watering prospect of facing his former side Crystal Palace.
