All of this evening’s Championship news as Watford move into a playoff spot and West Brom reclaim top-spot.

The Hornets’ fortunes improved away at a forlorn Plymouth Argyle with Manchester United loanee Tom Cleverly handing the visitors a lead inside five minutes at Home Park.

The knives are sharpening for Paul Sturrock now as Argyle slip to the foot of the table, with Watford’s defensive master-class saving the day for Malkay Mackay.

Moving off the foot of the table were Mark Robins’ Barnsley following their outstanding 3-2 win over Derby County at Pride Park.

The match appeared to be going to form when Rob Hulse handed the Rams a lead inside the half-hour, but winger Adam Hammill’s leveller sent the fixture into the break level.

Despite persistent pressure recent addition Andy Gray handed the Tykes the advantage, before Anderson de Silva sewed the fixture up in the final moments after Derby failed to consistently threaten.

There was time for a consolation as summer signing Shaun Barker reduced the arrears, but nevertheless this will go down as a disappointing performance and result for Derby County.

At the other end of the table West Bromwich Albion had to come from behind to defeat Doncaster Rovers and regain top spot in the Coca Cola Championship.

A shock was on the cards when Wade Fairhurst placed home after good work from loanee Billy Sharp, but Albion bounced back as they did against Plymouth with a defender once again to thank.

Shelton Martis and Marek Cech were on target against Argyle, this time it was Jonas Olsson who bagged a brace, before substitute Chris Wood hit a late stunner to secure top spot.

Roy Keane’s Ipswich Town continue to search for that elusive win as they remain firmly rooted in the relegation zone after a 1-1 home draw with Nottingham Forest – the Tractor Boys’ worst start for 40 years.

The signs were positive after a goal in the opening minute from recent capture Grant Leadbitter, but despite their continued dominance a Rob Earnshaw shot levelled matters shortly before the hour mark.

A tale of two penalties at the Walkers Stadium as Leicester City drop out of the playoff places after sharing the spoils with winless Peterborough United

George Boyd handed the Posh the lead shortly before the half-hour mark with Wayne Brown felling forward Aaron McLean.

Clearly unhappy with his side’s first half display Nigel Pearson made a double change and it paid dividends after Tommy Williams’ handball gave Bulgarian substitute Aleksandar Tunchev a goal from the spot.

Comebacks were all the rage this evening as Middlesbrough jumped back into the top two after recovering from an early set-back at Hillsborough.

Luke Varney gave Sheffield Wednesday the lead in the second minute, but a Darren Purse own goal levelled matters on the 20 minute mark.

After the break Jérémie Aliadiere continued his excellent goalscoring record to put the visitors in front before winger Adam Johnson sealed the game with five minutes remaining.

Coventry City managed to edge out Sheffield United despite the visitors peppering the home target in a bid to keep intact with the leading pack.

Leon Best’s 12th minute goal handed the Sky Blues the advantage before live-wire forward Jamie Ward brought matters level at the Ricoh Arena.

Clinton Morrison and Martin Cranie put City two goals infront inside the hour mark with Kieren Westwood called upon to produce some excellent saves to stop the rot at the other end.

Loanee James Harper reduced the deficit with his first strike for the Blades, but it was Coventry who edged closer to a playoff place.

Gary Hooper’s brace helped put Preston North End to the sword at Glanford Park with Scunthorpe United moving into the uncharted territory of the top-half.

Grant McCann gave the Iron a lead before Hooper struck either side of half time to give the hosts a three goal lead. John Parkin bagged a consolation for the Lilywhites who remain in the top six.

Finally to the bore draw at the Liberty Stadium as Paulo Sousa’s Swansea City were held by playoff candidates Bristol City.

The best of the chances fell to Craig Beattie and Jordi López with the hosts the more likely to break the deadlock. As it was the Robins hung on to help them keep pace with the playoff pack.
