Neil Warnock told the waiting media that he was delighted with the way Rangers played against Barnsley, following our 1-0 victory at Oakwell yesterday afternoon. That victory, our last away game of the 2009/2010 season, also ensured that we did the ‘double’ over Barnsley – having beaten them 5-2 at our place during the so-called purple patch of October ’09.
Yesterday, the game was settled by a stunning strike from Mikele Leigertwood, following good work from Hogan Ephraim. I’ve often criticised Ephraim for going down too easily – but yesterday, despite being manhandled by the Barnsley defender (or should I say minder?!), Ephraim stood his ground and was able to flick the ball round to Leigertwood who was near the right-hand edge of the Barnsley penalty area. He controlled the ball, cut inside before letting loose a screamer which ended up in the top right-hand corner of the goal.
In the words of his manager: ‘It was a strike fit to win any game of football. He (Mikele) produces a strike like that every now and again!’
Warnock acknowledged that the game was typically end-of-season like. But was quick to praise the lads, nevertheless: ‘I was pleased with how we played. It was very scrappy at times, but we stuck at it and the attitude of the players was very good.’
Warnock felt that, when we scored, we were on top but he also felt that we were somewhat sloppy in defence in the first half and needed to tighten things up: ‘In the first half we could have conceded but we played better in the second and got the clean sheet we were craving,’ he admitted.
