Just ahead of Queens Park Rangers opening up the 2019/20 Championship campaign against Stoke City on Saturday, new manager Mark Warburton spoke about the radical arrival of 14 players over the summer as he looks to stamp his mark on the squad and see us push back up the second tier table.
The revolving door at Loftus Road has been busy over the summer as we’ve also seen a number of departures and plenty of fans were sceptical about our chances given how light we looked up top, until the loan arrival of West Ham United striker Jordan Hugill and everyone knows what he can do at the Championship level.
It only took him eight minutes to open up his club account at the weekend as he helped us to a 2-1 win and Warburton’s first competitive victory and it certainly lifted spirits.
In quotes carried by the Evening Standard prior to the game, Warburton felt this was the perfect time for an overhaul given the state of some of the contract lengths we had on players.
“It is a major rebuild in terms of the squad, but we thought the time was right to do that. We had players out of contract, some with option years, and we looked at it and went the time was really right to – I wouldn’t say put a hand grenade in, that sounds too aggressive – but it was right to have some really radical surgery. There is a real competition for places and that was the key for me.”
Well, opening day went as well as it could’ve in terms of the victory and we just have to hope there are more of them than last season.
