Queens Park Rangers defender Damion Stewart played the entire game as Jamaica crashed to defeat against Canada in Los Angeles.

In the opening stage of the CONCACAF Gold Cup the Reggae Boyz were humbled by a 75th minute strike from former Milton Keynes Dons striker Ali Gerba.

The result at the Home Depot Centre saw Theodore Whitmore`s off to the worst possible start in the opening fixture in the competition.

In a squad packed full of current and former English league players including Ricardo Gardner, Claude Davis and Ricardo Fuller Jamaica simply did not have the fire-power to beat stopper Greg Sutton, a player currently without a club following his release from Toronto earlier this year.

Sutton did well to thwart QPR defender Stewart just after the hour mark, stopping his powerful close range effort following some excellent trickery from former Sheffield United man Luton Shelton.

It wasn`t the only shock in the early stages as El Salvador defeated Costa Rica by the odd goal to throw group A wide open after the first fixture. Two goals from Osael Romero, the latter coming in the final stages secured the win for Carlos de los Cobos` side.

Jamaica – Donovan Ricketts, Damion Stewart, Tyrone Marshall, Claude Davis (Omar Cummings 81), Demar Phillips, Jermaine Johnson (Jamal Campbell-Ryce 76), Rodolph Austin (Oneil Thompson 71), Jason Morrison, Ricardo Gardner, Ricardo Fuller, Luton Shelton.
