Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has moved to cease the rumours linking winger Adam Johnson with a move away from the Riverside.

Johnson, 20, had been linked with a move to Queens Park Rangers as well as UEFA Cup finalists Glasgow Rangers. Southgate refuted these links stating:

“Despite what has appeared in some papers we have not had a single approach from any club about Adam Johnson, we have had absolutely no contact about Adam from either Rangers or QPR, nor do we expect to have any.”

The Middlesbrough winger has made 44 appearances for ‘Boro in his career thus far, with only 14 starts. In his short career he has had two brief loan spells at Leeds United and Watford, the latter for which he scored at Loftus Road in a 1-1 draw.

Performances for Watford caught the eye of manager Southgate, who now seems reluctant to part company with Johnson

“As I have made it clear, he remains a big part in my plans for the club. Adam is a fantastic talent and I do not want to see him leave. He could be very, very special and I would not want to see him play for another club.”

The number 28 has played second fiddle to England international Stewart Downing, he too however has made his way through the England ranks, playing for both the Under 19`s and Under 21`s.
