Sousa – A Missed Opportunity

Having confessed that the weather had messed up the training schedule last week, Paulo Sousa admitted that he had made a mistake in changing the formation of the team from the so-called “diamond” formation to a traditional 4-4-2 to accommodate new winger, Wayne Routledge.

“We changed our shape and played without training very much because the weather gave us few opportunities to train,” Sousa explained, and the Northampton Chronicle reported.

‘When this happens it is better to keep playing the way we were before, so I take responsibility for this,” he added.

“We lost some control in midfield, where we had been playing with four in the middle. When you change things it doesn’t just click. We want to play a different way, but it does take time,” Sousa explained to waiting media.

Sousa told www.QPR.co.uk that he was disappointed with the result and particularly that the team didn`t manage to break down Coventry City, who had put 10 men behind the ball once they lost Stephen Wright to a straight red card on 36 minutes.

“We didn`t deal with the situation (the red card) as I would have liked,” he admitted.

“We have missed a good opportunity to win another home match,” he told the official website.

“We tried to win this game, but we didn`t ? we needed to be more clever – to think and react.

“We worked very hard, but our finishing wasn`t as good as I expect. We had good chances, but we suffered through missed opportunities.”

Sousa referred to the needless foul committed by Delaney together with Helguson which led to referee Keith Stroud awarding a free kick to Coventry, from which Danny Fox scored. “From our silly foul they scored from 30 metres.”

But before and after that incident Sousa thought that Rangers were in command:
“We were superior. Then (after their goal) we controlled it again and we got the equaliser, which I think we deserved.

“We had more than enough chances to win the game, but the ball just didn`t go in,”
he concluded.
