TOMMY Smith is the next reported target for Cardiff City following a move to take Heidar Helguson to the Welsh capital.

West London Sport have reported Smith’s potential transfer to the Cardiff City Stadium, another set to reunite with former Watford man Malky Mackay.

Smith – like Helguson – was a key figure in Rangers’ push for promotion in the latter part of the 2010-11 season – culminating in his clincher against the Hornets on the penultimate day.

The former Portsmouth man was left in England while the squad travelled to Malaysia on the pre-season tour, rather paving the way for his eventual move.

It will be a sad but inevitable move for Smith, much like his former team-mates that helped to get Rangers to their current status, but at this stage it is Cardiff City that are in line once more to benefit.

Smith netted crucial goals against Everton – Rangers’ first of the Premier League campaign – as well as an excellent strike from distance against relegation rivals Wigan Athletic.
