Kaspars Gorkss will be looking for a similar performance to that against Romania as Latvia take on Moldova in Republican.

Latvian journalist Edmunds Novickis runs the rule over the performance of Rangers defender Kaspars Gorkss and gives us his hopes for the forthcoming World Cup Qualifiers.

Latvia`s most recent fixture was the 1-0 defeat at the hands of Romania with Catania forward Nicolae Dica scoring the solitary goal from the penalty spot. Gorkss however came out of the game with flying colours according to Novickis,

“Gorkss as always played excellent in defence and he is our most reliable defender. The only goal Latvia conceded on that occasion was down to a goalkeeping error by our reserve keeper, and maybe the referee was harsh giving the penalty.”

Gorkss and another English based Latvian were the stars on the day as Latvia performed admirably in the face of a side that performed outstandingly in the European Championship`s ‘Group of Death`,

“In media it was said that best (most active) were two Latvian players who play in England – Gorkss (QPR) and Pereplotkins (Derby). Gorkss tested the goalkeeper with an excellent header from a set piece also.

Gorkss is set to start at the heart of the defence alongside former Arsenal defender Igors Stepanovs for today`s fixture away to Moldova, and will look to take a good run of form into the crucial home tie against Greece on Wednesday night.

For the game against Greece it seems that Kaspars has made himself quite the celebrity in his home country, being featured on the pre-match poster, click here to see the poster.

Following the defeat against Romania Edmunds was still hopeful for the future of the Latvian national side in what he considers one of the easier qualifying groups for the World Cup.

“Here in Latvia everybody is optimistic” said Novickis,

“Romania is top10 Europe side and Latvia looked really well against them and a draw could have been a fairer result.”

“As you maybe know, second qualification group in WC2010 is weakest and every team in that group (except Luxembourg) hopes to qualify for Word Cup. Even Latvia.”

In other Rangers international news Damien Delaney will be hoping to capitalise on the facial injury of Kevin Kilbane to take his place at left back in the Ireland team to face Georgia.

Delaney was left out of the side that drew 1-1 away to Norway, but Kilbane`s injury may tip the scales in his favour with the Wigan full back having to wear a face-mask to compete.

Also former Rangers forward, Marc Nygaard could be in for a shock return to the Denmark side, following an injury to first choice striker Nicklas Bendtner.

The Arsenal forward picked up a knock and is unlikely to be risked according to manager Morten Olsen, paving the way for a sensational recall for Nygaard after six long years in international wilderness.
