A QUICKFIRE riposte from Southampton saw them edge out a more spirited Queens Park Rangers at St Mary’s.

Saints had the running of the opening period but had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock as full-back Ryan Bertrand powered beyond Rob Green from close range.

Rangers stepped up the tempo and their deserved leveller came courtesy of a neat touch and strike from Charlie Austin to spark hope of a comeback among the travelling 3000.

Sadly Graziano Pellè stole the show with a fine solo effort, teeing the ball up before lifting a first time effort over the Green’s head barely two minutes after the visitors had levelled.

Kranjcar saw his free-kick cannon back off the bar as the fixture ebbed and flowed in the final stages – it was the Saints however that took all three points.
