Martin Rowlands has been forced to withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad after following an ankle injury sustained in training.

Rowlands shone in a recent friendly against Portuguese second tier opposition, after a recall to the Eire squad by new manager Giovanni Trapattoni, but has reluctantly withdrawn from the Portugal training camp.

Physio Paul Hunter spoke to the official website:

“I`ve spoken to Martin and obviously he is disappointed to be leaving the squad behind at their training camp in Portugal.”

“He`s had a scan on his ankle and we`re awaiting the results from the Irish medical team.”

Meanwhile fellow Rangers player Damien Delaney is progressing well and in line to start in the forthcoming international matches against Serbia and Colombia.

Rowlands is now returning to London from Portugal, but there is an impression he will receive many more chances in the future.
