Routledge On His Move To Newcastle

“It`s a hectic time,” Routledge told Sky Sports News` reporter this evening as he spoke about his transfer to Newcastle rapidly concluded this afternoon. I thought you might, perhaps, be interested to his illuminating (not!) words.

“You get a call. You have to make quick decisions. Like today, I`ve made a quick decision. I`m a Newcastle player.”

David Craig of Sky observed that Routledge had been “a bit of a hot property and sought after. There were a number of clubs chasing your signature. Why did you change to Newcastle?” he enquired.

“Newcastle`s Newcastle,” Routledge explained in wide-eyed innocence.

“Everyone knows what they`re about. It`s a massive club and obviously the fan base here is unbelievable. So, as soon as I got the call, the decision was made for me,” he continued.

Craig commented that Routledge, as a wide player, would be following in a great tradition at Newcastle, reminding Routledge of previous Newcastle players of a similar ilk like David Ginola and even Albert Stubbins, who played for the Toons back in the 1930s! So, just how does Routledge feel about following in the footsteps of these “true legends” Craig wondered.

“Like you said, there have been absolutely true legends playing for this club,” Routledge wisely replied!

“Obviously the club has a tradition and a way that they like to play and hopefully I can follow in the footsteps you`ve just named,” Routledge continued. Anyone else think he doesn`t even know who David Ginola is?!

Referring to having played for QPR at St James`s Park earlier this season, and inviting Routledge to compare Newcastle`s home ground to the likes of Aston Villa and Tottenham (Routledge`s previous Premiership clubs), Routledge went on to observe: “Sometimes you come here and you are in awe of the way the fans support their team here. But like I said, I`m on the right side now, I`m in the blue and white,” YES! He did slip up guys!!

Then he corrected himself with a wry smile and a shake of the head: “I mean the black and white stripes and I just can`t wait to get going.”

And thus ended Routledge`s career with QPR and his interview with Sky Sports News.
