Reported transfer target’s comments hint at disappointment for QPR

|

Rumoured QPR transfer target Stefan Schwab has confirmed that he is now out of contract at Rapid Vienna, but says that a new deal with the Austrian giants could still be agreed.

It was recently reported by The Daily Mail that QPR – along with Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City – are interested in a move for Schwab, who had been set to become a free agent when his contract expired at the end of this season.

However, it now seems as though an extended stay with Rapid is not out of the question for Schwab, as when asked about his future, the midfielder told Kicker: “For me, it is just unusual. For the first time in my career I have no contract. It feels challenging.

“There were no talks during the (global health crisis), but it was signalled that I wanted to continue (at Rapid Vienna). Now we’re talking again.

“Rapid is the biggest club in Austria with a great fanbase. Basically, I don’t want to jump into a new adventure.”

Would missing out on the signing of Stefan Schwab be a blow for QPR?

Yes

No

Indeed, having spent the last six seasons with Rapid, it seems the prospect of creating a lasting legacy with that one club – in the same way as some of world football’s most iconic names have done – could be appealing to Schwab, who added: “As a young guy I really liked the players who were with a club for a long time. I looked at Italy: del Piero, Maldini, Zanetti. That impresses me!”

Were Schwab to sign a new contract with Rapid, it would surely be something of a setback for Rangers.

Having scored nine goals in 32 appearances in all competitions this season, the 29-year-old could certainly have had a useful influence for Rangers from midfield.

With speculation around the future of the likes of Ebere Eze continuing, that is something the club may need to add to their squad when the window reopens, in order to avoid what could be an even more difficult campaign next season.
