The BBC site has historic significance according to English heritage, and thus would close the door on a potential Rangers move to the site.
Despite the noises made concerning the current ground Loftus Road, there can be no doubt that Rangers illustrious owners are looking forward to the future, and a move away from the home they`ve had since 1962.
There had been reported plans that the R`s were looking at the BBC site, following a potential shift in operations. The BBC reports that English Heritage want to see the site listed as a Grade II building:
‘This building is not just architecturally important.” The BBC reported.
‘As one of the first purpose-built television studios in the world, it represents the moment when Britain led Europe into the television age.”
‘The BBC itself is an important part of our British identity and Television Centre has acquired an iconic presence.’
A BBC spokesperson recognised English Heritage`s proposal, but stated whilst they were planning to decentralise their partial operations after 2012, no definitive plans had been made concerning the building itself:
‘The BBC is happy to discuss with English Heritage any proposal it has and we will comment to the secretary of state on the historic and architectural merit of Television Centre in due course.
‘The BBC has announced that it does not intend to occupy the whole of Television Centre after 2012 but any reference to detailed development plans for the building and site is premature.”
He continued
‘We recognise the historical importance of the building and will be looking for a solution that best preserves the interests of the BBC and licence fee payer but there are no firm plans currently on the table.’
The BBC currently sits side by side with Championship front runners, Queens Park Rangers in W12, with Loftus Road the Beeb`s ground of choice for filming several memorable television moments to date.
