A leading light in League One has been earmarked as a possible signing for Queens Park Rangers to stem the strikers crisis in W12.

21-year-old Simon Cox of Swindon Town has hit the back of the net 27 times in 45 appearances for the Robins and has been rumoured to joining QPR for £1.5m according to the London Informer.

The striker who is joint second in the League One goalscoring charts made the move to the County Ground in the late stages of the January transfer window of 2008.

Starting his career at home-town club, Reading, Cox had brief loan spells with Brentford, Northampton Town and Swindon Town. The striker was hotly tipped to rejoin the Cobblers, but made the undisclosed move believed to be in the region of £200,000, to the delight of Swindon Town supporters.

Cox scored 15 goals in 36 appearances for The Robins last season, partly whilst on loan from local rivals Reading.

News of a move for Scunthorpe United forward Gary Hooper also came to light in the same news outlet with an R`s source claiming:

“If Scunthorpe also get promoted, they’re likely to be in the same league as QPR – which might make it harder to get him. That, and Cox looks a better bet anyway.”

The former Grays striker had an unsuccessful spell with Southend United and was loaned out to Leyton Orient and Hereford United – where he was hailed as Super Gary Hooper by followers of the latter.

A £175,000 move to Scunthorpe United has proven extremely successful for the Iron with Hooper scoring 28 goals this campaign.
