QUEENS Park Rangers were put out of the Capital One Cup by League One Swindon Town at Loftus Road.

Swindon had the better of the opening half and got their just reward when Nile Ranger poked home Tottenham loanee, Alex Prichard’s low centre – all this while Alex Smith was forced to withdraw from action through injury.

In riposte QPR could merely muster a speculative Shaun Wright-Phillips header, while Jermaine Jenas went closest for the hosts with a right-footed volley that skipped wide of the upright.

Rangers were looking lacklustre and with the aforementioned Wright-Phillips and Bobby Zamora performing below-par once more, the crowd were quick to voice their frustration as the teams left the field at the break.

After the break Rangers appeared more urgent and the fixture was sparked into life when Andy Johnson and Mo Sharif were introduced at the expense of Zamora and the returning Samba Diakite.

Rangers thought they had their leveller when former Robins front-man Charlie Austin powered home, only to be met with a linesman’s flag to cut celebrations short, while Wright-Phillips had a penalty appeal turned down.

Tom Hitchcock was thrown on in the latter stages to try and reproduce his late Ipswich Town heroics but Alex Pritchard putting the final nail in the coffin in the latter stages – seizing upon a Nedum Onuoha error before rounding Clint Hill and slamming beyond Brian Murphy.

The second half fight-back was to no avail as Rangers fell at the second hurdle in the competition they last won in 1967, while Swindon Town will be overjoyed to be in the hat for the next round.
