After Gorkss` recent confession that the players must be more consistent and take responsibility for the below-par performances, another defender has spoken out about recent events at QPR. Peter Ramage has spoken about how he understands the anguish expressed and felt by Rs` fans after our recent performances. He wants to assure the fans that the players are determined to put things right.
Speaking about the game up at Ipswich (one I am still trying to forget about!), Ramage thought that we needed to have taken our chances, unlike Ipswich – who did three times! “The second half we huffed and puffed but we didn`t create anything of any major threat. They scored at the right times and went on to win the game.”
Gorkss had spoken about how Rangers were not conceding so many goals this time last year as we are this year. Ramage concurred: “Everybody when they see goals going in look at it defensively but you`ve got to look at it as a collective group that we`re conceding goals, right through from 1 to 11. And it`s the same at the other end, 1 to 11; you`ve got to look at why we aren`t scoring goals as well. So it`s a team effort on both parts and it`s a team effort that we are going to have to do to put it right.”
Ramage says that the players cannot understand why things are not going as well for us now as they were back in October, although the group of players is basically the same now as it was a few weeks ago, lacking only Rowlands and Mahon through injury. “We don`t know why it`s not going like it did in October. It`s not through lack of effort. The lads are trying their hearts out to try and put on performances. It`s just not happening at the minute. But we`ve all got to stick together – everybody, coaching staff, players, everybody have got to stick together – and work hard on the training pitch and hopefully it will click soon and we can get back to how we were playing and getting back to winning ways.”
Ramage is very sympathetic with the supporters plight, having watched some beautiful, free-flowing, score-at-will, football a matter of mere weeks ago. With no hesitation whatsoever, Ramage observed: “Definitely! Hundred percent!” about our frustrations. He continued: “It`s hard watching when you watched earlier in the season the great football we were producing and all the people talking about us and everything. And it`s been hard to replicate that in the last couple of games.
“They have got a massive part to play,” Ramage added about the role we, the supporters, have in helping the players in each and every game. “They`ve been brilliant. They really have been brilliant. They`ve stuck by us. It`s been a turbulent season in a way so far – there`s been a lot of highs and lows. But throughout the season they`ve backed us and we need them to continuing doing so.“
Remember – we are supporters – we are supposed to support not condemn!
Turning to the FA Cup 3rd round on Sunday at Bramall Lane, Ramage welcomed the chance to leave the league alone for a game.
“We had quite a good run in the Carling Cup last season. We got a few good results which helped us with our league form. So hopefully we can do the same at United.
“It`s a game away from the league. We can go out there – we`re away from home. And maybe Sheffield will be the favourites going into it and that might help us a little bit as well. So hopefully we can go there, enjoy the occasion and hopefully get a result and progress,” he finished hopefully!
I have to say, personally, that over the last few weeks I`ve have come to respect Peter Ramage more and more. He has given his all – even if it`s not always of a standard some fans would wish to see there is no doubting he plays with his heart on his sleeve and gives 100% week-in, week-out. And at the end of the game, he always comes over to acknowledge the fans – and recently, in particular, not many players have been doing that. So if Ramage thinks we`ve been brilliant as supporters – who am I to disagree?
