Peter Ramage is looking forward to showing boss Jim Magilton his capabilities as he prepares for the beginning of the Championship campaign.

The full back signed last season from recently relegated Newcastle United and he is raring to go for the first friendly against Aldershot on Saturday – a deal which sees the R`s reserves ply their trade at the Recreation Ground next season.

‘The lads are really looking forward to it, because it’s what we’ve been working towards over the last week or so,’ Ramage told QPR.co.uk.

‘Saturday signals the start of the countdown to the big kick-off in early August – we’ll get the rustiness out and be focused on showing the boss what we’re all capable of.’

While pre-season has predominantly been fitness orientated Ramage has noticed a shift from general fitness to football fitness in recent seasons. The system under Magilton will undoubtedly be different to that of Iain Dowie`s regime last season, where fitness was paramount.

Ramage has been enjoying life under the new boss during training, primarily because of the shift in the style of play, built around keeping the football and playing passing football.

He said: ‘It’s been very good. It’s all been football related and that’s great for the lads.

‘We’ve done specific football stuff and some five-a-sides, fun and games if you like, but the focus of it all is around keeping the ball and playing a passing brand of football.

‘It’s been really enjoyable and that’s great for us because it builds team spirit.’

After falling out of favour under Paulo Sousa, the full back regained his place towards the latter end of the 2008-09 campaign to put in some favourable displays at right back.

Ramage made 34 appearances in his first season for the R`s after moving down from his boyhood club Newcastle United.
