QPR’s best not good enough reveals important figure – report

|

QPR director of football Les Ferdinand has come out and said that the club made the best offer they possibly could for Nahki Wells, but ultimately, it just wasn’t enough.

The club were dealt a hammer blow in late January as it became evident that Burnley were looking to cash in on the forward who had been making such an impact at Loftus Road.

At 29-years-old, Wells was finally really finding his feet at this level and looked one of the most dangerous forwards in the league, which unsurprisingly caught the interest of many clubs looking to break into the Premier League.

The former Huddersfield forward has scored 14 Championship goals this campaign – making him the joint-fifth highest scorer in the league – and was making himself a proper fan favourite.

So, when Burnley eventually did recall him from his loan spell, there was quiet optimism that the club might be able to pull off his signing on a permanent basis, with CEO Lee Hoos even publicly saying that they will do all they can to pull off his transfer without putting the club in financial jeopardy.

Unfortunately, all that interest came to no prevail, and he ended up moving to Bristol City instead who are flirting with the play-off zones.

Now, in an interview with Ferdinand, he has opened up on their attempts to sign the Bermudian.

He said (via the Brent and Kilburn Times): “We had Nahki Wells and he was doing so well and unfortunately we couldn’t afford to buy him from Burnley.

“We knew that, hence why we took him on loan at the start of the season.

“When someone comes in on loan you want them to do their job and his job was to score goals and he did that pretty well.

“Unfortunately when people do their job well others are going to come looking and that’s what happened.

“We knew it was touch and go, we made the best offer we could but Bristol City made him a better one and unfortunately he decided to go there.”

It’s unfortunate that the club couldn’t get a deal done, but at least the board has been fully transparent about their financial situation and not willing to take a risk on FFP.

Have the club done well since its FFP sanction?

Yes

No

Not sure

In his absence, Jordan Hugill also seems to be stepping up to the plate and is actually just four goals behind Wells for the Championship season.

The West Ham loanee has 10 goals to his name, which isn’t bad going whatsoever.

In fairness, the club have dealt with it very well and their results haven’t been hampered. The main threats still come from Eberechi Eze and Bright Osayi-Samuel, so as long as they’re both still there, it seems as if the chances will come.
