Queens Park Rangers passed up an opportunity to face Serie A outfit Parma to instead play League One side Southampton.

In the past QPR have always had that rousing home friendly to prepare them for a new campaign. Indeed in the past Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic and Fulham have all visited Loftus Road and by and large been given a run for their money.

The visit of The Flying Donkeys of Chievo Verona could be considered the R`s biggest friendly last season – but it emerged from the Kilburn Times today that they passed up Italian opposition once more.

Parma had wanted an English friendly on Saturday August 1, and have been forced to look elsewhere, Watford, while QPR play newly relegated League One side Southampton.

The Saints fixture joins the remaining games against Aldershot, Forest Green Rovers, Oxford United and Wycombe Wanderers – some of which in the past would have been considered fixtures for a QPR XI.

From a purely PR point of view, for a club which is constantly trying to raise its profile in an ever demanding global market, this move will raise more questions than answers as Jim Magilton prepares the troops for next season.
