Christopher Samba was brought in at great cost, predominantly as a Redknapp gambit for keeping Rangers in the Premier League, ultimately it did not succeed. The defender was certainly a domineering presence, but his shortcomings were exploited.

Against Fulham he was pressurised and cracked under that pressure in a horror display, but that was not typical of his time at Rangers. He was quite sturdy alongside Clint Hill, but could not prevent some disappointing conceded goals.

Tony Fernandes took a sizeable gamble in not only signing Samba, but retaining the Congolese international when interest from Russia made itself apparent shortly before the window closure – it would have proven a profit for Rangers who decided to retain the defender.

Whether he remains is certainly open to debate, interest is sure to be fierce. If a deal is reached it would certainly enable Redknapp to enter the market with the wages and transfer fees freed up. His talent is undoubted, particularly in the second tier but the sale could be a required sacrifice for the benefit of the squad.
