Parejo Flies The Coop!

It will come as no surprise, following rumours last week that Real Madrid were preparing to recall Parejo to cover their growing injury list, that Dani Parejo has indeed returned to the Spanish giants. The deal was done, according to website “zerozero.pt”, on Monday 15th December; although it has only been announced on the QPR Official Website this evening.

Parejo joined the Rs in the summer, having beaten off stiff competition from a whole host of European clubs, including Arsenal, Deportivo La Coruna and Villareal. At the time of his signature, QPR hailed Parejo as “Spain`s brightest prospect”. He was described as “a technically gifted midfielder with pace and skill in abundance.”

Parejo made his long-awaited league debut in our first home game of this season, on Saturday 9th August, when we beat Barnsley 2-1. He came on after 72 minutes as a substitute for Patrick Agyemang. This debut as a substitute was followed, a few days later, by a place in the starting XI for the League Cup 1st round match against Swindon. In neither game did Parejo manage to score – a trend that continued in all the games that he played in for us.

In all, Parejo made eighteen appearances for the Rs, not scoring any goals, but picking up two yellow cards (during the 2-0 win against Doncaster and in the 0-0 draw at Reading)! Parejo`s last game for us was in the 0-0 draw away to Crystal Palace where, after another poor performance in the blue & white hoops, he was unceremoniously substituted at half-time by new boss, Paulo Sousa, to be replaced by Heidar Helguson.

QPR fans were left, by the end, wondering what all the fuss had been about: this was a so-called “wonder-kid” who had not set Loftus Road alight, despite all the hype. Parejo often had a look which implied that he wished to be anywhere else rather than playing first-team football for the Rs. A perfect example of this was at Old Trafford, in the 4th round of the League Cup, when Parejo failed to respond to the more glamorous surroundings of Manchester United`s home ground, and was rightly substituted at half-time after another very disappointing performance in midfield.

Parejo was often lazy and made very little effort for the team. His passes were too often wayward and carelessly executed. His much vaunted pace and skill were rarely in evidence, if at all. Although he tried one or two tricks at times, particularly at free-kicks, he not only failed to set the Coca Cola Championship alight, on Rangers` behalf; he also failed to set the Rs fans` hearts pumping.

Although Parejo played as many as 18 times for the Rs, being substituted on at least 6 separate occasions, the general consensus is that his loan period was not a successful one. Rumours have been rife about the level of wages being paid to Parejo, although he didn`t seem, in my opinion, to justify such high wages. If true, at least his departure will free up cash for a midfielder to replace the injured Akos Buzskay or a much-needed striker!

That may sound cold! But equally, I am sure that I speak for all Rangers` fans when I say that I truly wish him well for the future. I hope that he does fulfil his potential, and that we are treated to his skills and ability at Loftus Road sometime in the years to come.
