Opinion: Pressure at QPR has been turned up significantly in light of Nahki Wells’ recall

|

This came as a little bit of a surprise, but at the same time we should really have been expecting it.

So after the last few days of speculation regarding his future, it looks like we finally have an answer to everything. Although with Mark Warburton saying only yesterday that ‘all parties are happy’, the news did come out of left field.

It was confirmed today that Burnley have recalled Nahki Wells from his loan at Loftus Road this season, as they endeavour to try and make some money on him given that he only has a few months left on his deal at Turf Moor.

Speaking in the aftermath of the Bermudan being recalled, CEO Lee Hoos spoke about the desire that QPR have to bring him back to West London in the near future, but that financial restrictions might come in the way of such a scenario:

“I wouldn’t normally make any comments regarding potential transfer targets but in this instance it is important our supporters know we are keen to sign Nahki on a permanent basis. Our current valuations on the player are far apart and we cannot agree to a deal which will leave us in breach of FFP. We are working hard for a positive conclusion but we must ensure any agreement is financially viable for QPR.”

It’s good to hear that a member of the board is willing to actually be transparent in these sort of matters, I wish that more football clubs were like this, especially in the age of ‘undisclosed fees’, where you don’t truly know the value of a player.

However, the way he paints it, I don’t think that fans should be getting their hopes up too much. The way he spoke about the values being ‘far apart’ probably means that this deal is over before it even starts.

What that does mean though, is that his replacement is going to have to be absolutely spot on. I have spoken before about the club seemingly being too reliant on players like Wells to deliver this season, and now that the reality is staring us hard in the face, we are going to get his replacement absolutely spot on.

Do others players in the squad need to step up in Wells' absence?

Yes

No

Or we could find ourselves tumbling down the table if we can’t find someone to replace the goals we’ve just lost.
