One to Watch – Billy Sharp

Doncaster Rovers’ prolific striker Billy Sharp has been pinpointed as the One to Watch as Donny make the trip down to Loftus Road for an exciting Championship meeting.

Doncaster’s club record signing Billy Sharp will be determined to add to his tally of two goals for the season against top of the table QPR at Loftus Road on Saturday. Renown for his clinical finishing and superior work-rate, the Rangers defence can expect a tough workout from the 5′ 9′ front man.

Lifelong Blades fan Sharp signed for Sheffield United as a schoolboy in 2002 but, after leaving the Academy, failed to establish himself in then manager Neil Warnock’s squad; making only two brief substitute appearances for United.

In January 2005 he was sent on loan to Rushden & Diamonds where he was instrumental in helping the club avoid relegation, netting nine goals in 16 appearances. Returning to Sheffield for only a short while, he was sold to Scunthorpe for a fee of £100 000.

Renowned for his goal celebrations as he is his goals, Sharp truly earned his reputation at Glanford Park, where he smashed a host of records. Scoring the most ever goals in a season for the Iron, in all Sharp struck home 53 goals in 82 appearances whilst at Glanford Park.

Sharp rejoined Sheffield United in 2007 for a fee of around £2 million. He seemed to struggle in his second spell at Brammall Lane, only managing to score eight times in 51 appearances; most notably a hat-trick against QPR at the beginning of the 2008/2009 season.

After much speculation linking Sharp away from the club, he eventually joined Doncaster on a season long loan in the summer of 2009. He fast became a fan’s favourite and an impressive goalscoring season where he netted 15 times in 33 appearances led him to eventually rejoining the club in 2010 for a club record fee of £1.15 million. ‘King Billy’ will certainly have to be stopped if Rangers are determined to keep yet another clean sheet.
