After what was an indifferent start to the Third Division season Alec Stock`s Queens Park Rangers came roaring back with an outstanding 13 match unbeaten run to take the league by storm.
Among the victories included thumping results at home to Middlesborough (4-0), Doncaster Rovers (6-0) and Grimsby Town (5-1) along with 4-1 home wins over Leyton Orient and Workington.
The R`s away form was also great cause for cheer with the stand-out result of a 7-1 win over Mansfield Town on their own turf, courtesy of a hatrick from Rodney Marsh.
Scunthorpe were languishing at the wrong end of the table along with Swansea Town, Leyton Orient and Swindon Town and Fred Goodwin`s side weren`t helped by a run of only one win in seven.
Among their catalogue of disasters so far was the 7-1 away defeat to Grimsby Town and being edged out 3-1 by relegation rivals Leyton Orient at the beginning of the campaign.
Stock named an unchanged side from the prior victory over Workington naming the in-form Rodney Marsh at centre forward alongside Les Allen. Marsh had scored 21 goals thus far in League and Cup and sought to continue his impressive run against the Iron.
Marsh`s impact on the game was as to be expected as he put the Iron to the sword at the Old Show Ground, bagging a brace for the visiting side to spur them on in the league.
His ever-growing tally was taken to 23 as Rangers continued to chase down Bristol Rovers at the summit of the Third Division. A win over Torquay United in the next game (2-1) took QPR to the head of the division and it was a place they wouldn`t relinquish.
Rangers took the title ahead of Middlesborough with 67 points, but that wasn`t to be the only silver wear of the campaign. QPR capped off a truly sensational season winning the League Cup final at Wembley with a 3-2 win over First Division West Bromwich Albion.
It was an unprecedented double with Roger Morgan Rodney Marsh and Mark Lazarus capping off a memorable come-back for Rangers who were two goals down at half time.
