RED hot Rangers hosted lowly Charlton Athletic in the Second Division with a view to over-taking table topping Luton Town.

Teams: Queens Park Rangers v Charlton Athletic

Date: Saturday 24th November, 1979

Competition: Football League Division Two

Venue: Loftus Road, London.

Rangers came into the fixture lying second in the second division just a point behind leaders Luton Town, and only one defeat at home prior to the fixture including a thumping 7-0 win over Burnley stood them in good stead against the Addicks.

Charlton`s sporadic form had seen them without a win on the road all season, and with only three wins in the campaign thus far the Addicks were sitting in a dangerous 20th place in the second division. So they travelled to Loftus Road in trepidation looking to break their away duck.

Andy Nelson`s men were truly second best on the day as Rangers hit top form and also the summit of the second division with a four star display from young central midfielder Gary Waddock.

Waddock drew the plaudits from the national media for his all action role in the heart of the midfield, but it was another young prodigy Clive Allen that got the Rangers ball rolling after a familiar face made an error in W12.

Tony Hazell, sold to Charlton Athletic from Queens Park Rangers brought down Glenn Roeder in the area, and Clive Allen duly dispatched the spot kick. David Campbell then gift-wrapped Rangers` second when he poorly misplaced backpass only served to pick out Allen once again, and the striker slammed home his 16th of the season.

Stan Bowles and Glenn Roeder completed the rout as the Super Hoops marched on to a 4-0 win over a forlorn Charlton Athletic.

Things went from bad to worse for the Addicks as they finished the season bottom of the second division with a mere 22 points, as Rangers finished fifth with 49 points, six points off leaders Leicester City.
