Wayne Routledge, ex-Aston Villa winger, has joined QPR having rejected a late effort by Cardiff City to make his loan deal with them permanent.

Routledge has plied his trade in the south for most of his career, playing for teams such as Crystal Palace, Tottenham, Portsmouth and Fulham. The furthest north he has travelled is to Aston Villa, who have agreed terms with QPR to bring Routledge to Loftus Road in time to feature for the Rs against Burnley in the FA Cup tomorrow, should Sousa wish to use him.

Routledge joined Villa from Fulham in August 2008, for a fee of £1,250,000, but made only two starts and appearing as a substitute for the Midlands’ team only 6 times. He wasn’t able to supplant Ashley Young or James Milner from the starting XI. So, on 20th November 2008, Villa sent Routledge out on loan to Championship side Cardiff City, on a two-month loan.

In 9 appearances for the Bluebirds, Routledge scored 2 goals. More importantly, he impressed Cardiff City manager Dave Jones sufficiently that he wanted to retain Routledge’s services on a permanent basis. This was not to be!

Wayne Routledge is 23 years old – well, until next Wednesday that is, when he will celebrate his 24th birthday!! Routledge is a midfielder who usually plays on the right wing; but he is versatile enough to be able to play on the left. He has represented England at Under-16, Under-19 and Under-21 level.
