Accrington stalwart Paul Mullin believes that a win tonight could help safeguard the future of his club, as Stanley face a tough financial outlook.
The League Two side have a £300,000 tax bill crippling the club at present. So much so that Mullin’s brother John may be forced to retire through injury just to boost the coffers for more signings.
The striker who has played a staggering 320 games for Stanley is looking to get beyond the R`s tonight and set up a money-spinning tie at a Premier League club.
He told the Lancashire Telegraph: “We`ve never really had a big tie in this competition. Hopefully this time we can get through and get a plum draw.
“If we could get through, financially it could solve our situation for this season and hopefully it would have consequences for next season as well.
“So I think we all know this is a really important game for us.”
The striker isn`t expected to take part this evening with manager John Coleman looking to reshuffle a misfiring front line. Former Everton man Michael Symes could take his place alongside John Miles.
35-year-old Mullin admits he doesn`t know which side his manager will field this evening at Loftus Road, but it`s an opportunity to rotate the squad and get away from the perils of League Two football.
“I`m not too sure at the moment what side the manager`s going to put out,” said Mullin.
“We`ve got a squad and I think he might look to use it a bit.
“I think the cup will be good for us to get away from the league for a game.
“But it`s going to be tough because they`re two levels above us and because of the finances available to them. They`ve got money we can only dream of really.”
The game kicks off at 7:45pm and as always will be played to a finish. Accrington come into the game off the back of a win against Walsall in the last round while Rangers can take confidence from their 5-0 hammering of Exeter City.
