Mark Warburton reflects on key moment for QPR in Wigan defeat

|

QPR manager Mark Warburton admits Ilias Chair should have equalised for his side in their 1-0 defeat at Wigan on Wednesday night, and says that doing so could have changed the complexion of the game.

Kieffer Moore’s strike had put the hosts 1-0 up 33 minutes into the game, although Rangers missed a big chance to equalise after half-time, when substitute Olamide Shodipo teed up Chair inside the winger area, only for the attacker to fire his effort straight at Wigan ‘keeper David Marshall.

That means that QPR have now picked up just three points from five games since the restart, and Warburton believes that Chair’s squandered opportunity was yet another of example of his side’s lack of ruthlessness in front of goal this season.

Talking about that miss from the 22-year-old after the game, Warburton was quoted by West London Sport as saying: “We have to score. You can’t miss from four yards out, basically in the middle of the goal. We can’t miss those chances.

“If you look at the stats this season, I think for a long time we were second or third in terms of chances created.

“There’s been no problem this season in terms of creating chances. We have been guilty in terms of missing them – many of them gilt-edged chances.

“We’ve got some very young players, but you’ve got to score. Tonight it was Ilias. But we’ve been guilty all season of it.”

Is Mark Warburton the right man for QPR?

Yes

No

Discussing how different things could have been had Chair found the net, Warburton continued: “When that chance comes to Ilias, put it in the back of the net tonight and then there’s 25 minutes to play.

“If it had been 1-1 we could have taken control of the second half and been in a good position. You’ve got to take your chances.”

This does look to be a big problem for QPR.

Obviously, if you do not take your chances, you cannot win games, and too often this season, Rangers have been left relying on Jordan Hugill, Ebere Eze and the already-departed Nahki Wells to take those opportunities.

With Hugill still only on loan from West Ham and speculation around Eze refusing to go away as we approach the transfer window, it seems as though those problems could get even worse next season, meaning Warburton may have to act fast to stop the club looking down rather than up.
