Queens Park Rangers boss Jim Magilton was quick to praise to the away following at St James’ Park last night following a spirited draw.

The R’s fans that populated Level 7 of the Sir John Hall stand were vocal throughout to silence a 38,000 strong crowd.

‘The fans should be very proud of their Football Club tonight and we’re proud of them,’ Jim told QPR.co.uk.

‘It was some journey for them today, but every time we heard them it gave us that little gee up and they – like the players – were first class.’

Rangers took an early lead in the fixture when Ben Watson’s drive deflected past Steve Harper off the outstretched boot of Steven Taylor.

The Magpies’ leveller came courtesy of substitute Marlon Harewood, who helped dispel the miserable mood that drifted over St James’ by planting home under an inspired Radek Cerny.

Despite the equaliser Magilton was delighted with the character of his Queens Park Rangers side, branding them ‘magnificent’.

Jim continued: ‘It was a test of character for us tonight, but we stood up to it from the first minute to the last and we were simply outstanding.

‘The manner in which we went about our business tells you everything you need to know about this group of players.

‘The belief is growing and we’re moving in the right direction.

‘The more I find out about this group of players, the more belief I gain.’

While admitting his side could have kept the ball a little better at times Magilton was evidently beaming at what was a creditable result for Rangers.

It puts the R’s within touching distance of the playoffs, with sections of the media now considering Rangers part of the chasing pack looking to chip away at Newcastle’s early lead.

Rangers now face a trip to face Paulo Sousa’s Swansea City on Saturday, with Magilton and Rangers hoping for a similar result the last time the two met in Championship action.

Despite taking an early lead, QPR were royally thumped by the free-flowing attacking football of Magilton’s Ipswich side – which alleviated some of the pressure he was under at the time.
