Jim Magilton has been appointed as the new manager of Queens Park Rangers.

The former Liverpool youth product today (Wednesday) penned a two year deal with QPR which will see him through to the end of the 2010-11 season.

Vital QPR can reveal that the club were hoping to persuade Luigi De Canio to come back to Loftus Road, explaining the length of negotiations as De Canio was still in a post at Lecce.

The former QPR boss has opted to remain in Italy and was hoping to take the job at Bari once an anticipated move from Antonio Conte came to fruition.

Once Conte took the unprecedented step of penning a new deal De Canio was left without a job after QPR had put their faith in Jim Magilton, a man they had interviewed four times.

Magilton takes over from caretaker manager Gareth Ainsworth who had his second stint in the interim position following the departure of Paulo Sousa.

The former Northern Ireland international took over from Joe Royle at Ipswich and steered the Tractor Boys to a 14th placed finish in 2006/07.

The following season he managed to build a formidable home record at Portman Road but it wasn`t enough to attain at playoff place as the blues finished eighth to miss out by a solitary point.

Last season Magilton`s Ipswich flattered to deceive despite significant investment in the side and the local newspaper called for him to be sacked. He clung on to pick up two classy wins over Queens Park Rangers – the latter at Loftus Road live on Sky.

Owner Marcus Evans then saw fit to sack Magilton out of the blue by telephone while the Northern Irishman was on compassionate leave, days later Roy Keane was appointed to the vacant post.

Magilton will be tasked with improving the playing staff and indeed the style of play with sections of support critical over Rangers poor product on the field since the departure of Luigi De Canio.
